" A light in the darkness"
The concept of the ministry started over 14 years ago. A group of concerned citizens and the Sumter Ministerial Association saw a need. People in a crisis would knock on church doors and ask for assistance. They would end up speaking to a church staff person or sometimes they would catch a pastor who was already stretched for time. The church was not equipped to handle the crisis. The church had little or no background on the person and did not know if they had been assisted somewhere else.
UMSC opens... On January 12, 1994. We start each day with devotional and prayer with the staff and volunteers, and we pray with the clients before we do anything. We have the ability to spend the time necessary to hear the people. We spend about 45 minutes with each client. We require proper ID and are able to verify much of our information, and we keep accurate records. We share Gods direction for our lives in love. We discourage unhealthy lifestyles and relationships. We encourage people to be accountable by educating them. We work with other agencies and ministries in town, not replace them. We are accountable to our supporters, but first we are accountable to GOD. We work within the realm of grace, as our Lord and Savior gives grace to us.
UMSC is governed... by a thirteen member Board of Directors. A nominating committee proposes candidates for membership to the Board. A majority vote of the persons present at a duly constituted Commission meeting shall be necessary to elect Board members. UMSC Is Staffed… By volunteers, who share God’s love and a concern for all people. The ministry has a paid, full-time executive director and three paid part-time staff. The office is open to clients Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.
